New titles in learning and teaching

Posted by onlineteachernetwork on 10th October 2007

The CIT Library has some interesting new titles now available. Interestingly, the spread shows quite a learner-centred paradigm both now and a decade ago!

Pamela T. Northrup (ed) (2007) Learning objects for instruction: design and evaluation. Hershey PA : Information Science Pub.

Ah, so much to read and so little time! :)

Introducing a sparkly new FLS staff member!

Posted by onlineteachernetwork on 25th September 2007

I’d like you all to meet Aaron.

Aaron

Aaron started with us this week as our newest (and possibly shiniest) educational designer :)

Aaron will beef up the FLS team with his enthusiasm and his skills in imagining CIT’s next generation online learning environment (whatever that may be).

Aaron comes to us with a varied background (always a handy thing) and has worked in the school and VET sectors for many years. Although he reckons he’s never ‘gotten into blogging’ before, he’s just started one today!

He’ll be making the rounds at CIT, as well as further afield, so please make him feel welcome :)

Art is research! Re-scripting spaces for learning

Posted by onlineteachernetwork on 6th September 2007

After following Bee’s blog post about u-learning and watching to Scoble video, I skipped over to YouTube and picked up the designing learning spaces (or more accurately, the ‘antinormalizer’) video Bee refers to, about re-scripting spaces in which we learn (blog post is here).

Take a look – it’s left-field and will no doubt get you thinking about how learning spaces can change as we engage more and more with ubiquitous technologies like mobile phones. It certainly got me thinking about how we use spaces (think of how often you go to a shopping centre these days and what it’s actually made up of!). Perhaps we’re underusing our spaces, or perhaps we could reconfigure our spaces for multiple uses more?

Likewise, if you want to find out more about m-learning and mobile phones in learning, you might want to get over to CIT Reid campus in Canberra where Alex Hayes is presenting – quick, he’s already started! :)

He’s running his session again tomorrow same time (10.30am) – check out his presentation online at slideshare.

Library SuperSearch tool now available

Posted by onlineteachernetwork on 24th May 2007

As part of activities held for Library Information Week, I attended the launch of the CIT Library’s new search tool called SuperSearch. It’s a search tool that allows users to search across a range of databases (plus the existing library catalogue) and filter search results to full-text, by author, and so on.

Julieanne and Heather showcase SuperSearch

What’s so special about this tool? Well, probably nothing much to the eye, except that it can potentially lift the rate of use of the databases CIT subscribes to, making it even more cost-effective to have them in the first place! Also, with many of our students (often studying in highly practical contexts), getting to understand how databases work can be more trouble than it’s worth. So the SuperSearch tool should go some way to alleviating the frustration of locating a relevant database, searching (and each database has its own search method), and retrieving or saving results for later use.

SuperSearch allows you to email search results (which you can filter further by checking those you wish to keep) and the email contains the direct link to the article you found. You can also save and download a copy for offline reading.

How do you use it?

  1. Start at the CIT Library catalogue page
  2. Click the link to SuperSearch (internal at CIT or external if outside CIT)
  3. Enter the barcode found on your CIT student (or staff) card

Start searching!
